A handwritten note found underneath the late Aretha Franklin’s sofa has named her son Kecalf Franklin as the executor of her estate. This discovery brings to an end a five-year long battle between the singer’s family as to who the legal executor is and who is to inherit the estate.

During the court hearing, Kecalf stated that it was not unusual for his mother to handle business on the couch and therefore he was not surprised for a Will to have been found under the sofa.

Whilst it is possible to make your own Will at home, it is recommended to instruct a solicitor to ensure that your Will is drawn up correctly. Not only will a solicitor ensure that your Will is valid, they will also be able to advise you on inheritance tax, how to estate plan for the future and also store your Will securely for you. It may also be advisable to register the Will on the National Will Register, a solicitor can help with this, to ensure that the latest version can always be found.
