It’s Not Just Your Car That Needs Fluids…

Now the weather seems to be hotting up, most drivers take steps to check their cars oil level, coolant and windscreen wash before setting off on a long journey.

But what about the driver?

Being dehydrated behind the wheel can affects your concentration levels and co-ordination. Scientists from Loughborough University put a number of motorists through a series of tests on driving simulators to monitor the effects of mild dehydration.

The results included:

  • Loss of focus
  • Feeling drowsy
  • Dry mouth (obviously)
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Muscle cramps.
  • .. The most worrying result was slower reaction times.

According to the Department for Transport, driver error due to factors such as the above are the biggest cause of road accidents in the UK, with 68% of crashes as a result of this.
