Savouring a Bailey’s with family and friends is a cherished holiday tradition, but it’s easy to lose track of a few extra drinks before getting behind the wheel.

As one of Essex’s leading drink-driving and motoring solicitors, we assist hundreds of clients each year at our Chelmsford office—many of whom had no idea they were over the legal limit until it was too late.

In Essex alone, 142 drivers were arrested for drink driving in December 2023, totalling 1059 for the whole year.

What is the Drink Drive Legal Limit in the UK?

In Great Britain, it is against the law to drive a vehicle if your alcohol concentration exceeds specified limits:

  • 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath,
  • 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood or
  • 107 milligrams per 100 milligrams of urine.

Drink Driving Statistics:

In July 2024, the Government released their latest data on Drink Driving in the UK, estimating the months that collisions and casualties would be at their highest.

December was estimated at a total of 380 collisions and 550 casualties, with June leading the board at 430 collisions and 630 casualties.

In addition, the Government published their estimations on the time-of-day people are most likely to be involved fatal crashes, with 21:00 – 23:00 being the prime time, totalling an estimate of 60 fatalities in just 2 hours.

‘Can I Have One Drink and Then Drive?’

Alcohol affects everyone differently, no matter how small of an amount. We recommend that if you are planning to drive somewhere, refrain from drinking alcohol altogether.

Practicing safety while driving is essential, and it’s important to take proactive steps to avoid dangerous situations at all times.
