Live Facial Recognition vans are being introduced to cut down on senior crime.
The context for this is the Government’s Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee. The Home Office has announced that there will be 13,000 more police officers in communities by 2029. The public will have direct links to their local force and dedicated anti-social behaviour leads and patrols will be introduced in town centres.
10 new Live Facial Recognition vans will be rolled out across 7 police forces. This measure is intended to provide officers with cutting-edge technology to catch high-harm criminals. These vans will only be deployed when there is specific intelligence about the potential whereabouts of a criminal who is wanted for the most serious crimes including sex offences, violent assaults and murder.
Police forces such as the Metropolitan Police and South Wales Police have already seen success with these vans. The Met reported that in 12 months they had made 580 arrests for offences including rape, grievous bodily harm and knife crime.
